VavaVida works with Project Concern International
Project Concern International, or PCI for short, is an amazing San Diego based non-profit organization… and we’re lucky to work with them.
We chose to work with PCI because we feel they reflect our values and our goals best. Their mission is to go where they are the most needed. They work in the poorest communities in the poorest regions of the least developed countries in the world. Often times where others deem it too difficult to work. Once there, they work hard to create the conditions that unleash people’s potential to transform their own lives by giving them the skills to transform their lives and that of others around them. The goal of all this is to create a community that is going to create lasting changes, lasting growth for the community.
Because VavaVida is so much geared towards women, we decided to work with PCI on helping women in the countries we buy our products from. That’s why we are working with them on the Women Empowerment program, aka WE.
Let’s take Yvonne, for example:
In a community of Zambia where the devastating effects of the AIDS pandemic have spared no one, Yvonne is a beacon of strength and determination. She lost hear husband, and two weeks later, lost a child. Her grief led her to a local PCI WE group, where she found support and – ultimately – hope. “Now I am able to put a smile on my face” she says. Today, she is a respected group leader who is helping other women learn the skills they need to achieve economic independence.
And that’s no mean feat…
VavaVida is a different from other Fair Trade retailers because we are participating in the full circle of things:
- We buy from Fair Trade producers and artisans and we help them that way.
- We retail their products and educate our customers about Fair Trade.
- We give back to the countries where we buy our beautiful jewelry from.
That’s what we mean by full circle my friends…
Currently, VavaVida donates 10% of ALL our revenues to PCI. We want to be bold, we want to be brave and help A LOT. We are still a small but we want to help and create change in a big way.
But we don’t stop there.
The day of the African Child
For several projects during the year, we will increase the % we donate to create even more impact (up to 25%), like the one coming up this June 16. It’s the “Day of the African Child,” a day created by the African nations to commemorate a horrible event in 1976 South Africa where the police shot to kill kids demonstrating against the lack of quality education for black children.
When you buy our star Healing Hearts Bracelet during the month of June 2013, 25% of the price is going to PCI to help fund education in Africa. Now, THAT’s a something you can get behind.
